Happiness is a Sense of Purpose and Well-being
When people think of happiness and joy, they don’t tend to think of those as affecting health. But
Happiness and Joy can translate into a variety of effects on a person’s physical and mental health. A person’s positivity, optimism, and vitality are crucial to an individual’s health. Happiness and joy tend to lower the risk for cardiovascular disease, improves blood pressure, promote better sleep, and reduces stress. Below is a deeper look at the effects of joy on your body.
Heart health is essential to an individual’s well-being. It’s been shown that being joyful lowers heart rate and blood pressure. High blood pressure can be unknown or without symptoms. Hypertension is sometimes called a silent killer. Untreated high blood damages blood vessels and leads to serious health problems.
Controlling blood pressure can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. With medication and joy, you can get high blood pressure under control. Individuals who are happy and joyful produce more cortisol. Lower cortisol levels have lower blood pressure and heart rates. Patients with lower cortisol levels have lower blood pressure and heart rates, which equals better cardiovascular health. Over time being happy pays off, Which equals better cardiovascular health. This shows that over time being joyful pays off.
The body’s immune system responds positively to happiness and joy. This increase in happiness produces enhanced circulation of the blood in the body. This increase in circulation provides all the body parts and areas with more blood flow. For example, if you have an infection within your body the increase in blood flow will allow more blood to reach the areas that contain the infection.
With more blood available, the infection will be supplied with more nutrients that are needed for the healing process. Sometimes medications and antibiotics are needed for treating an infection. The increased blood flow will enable the needed amount of medication to reach the infected area, which will assist the healing process.
It has been shown that joy and happiness can lead to greater resistance to stress. There are many ways to lift our spirits and experience more joy. Some of those things could be can playing with a pet, watching a comedy, or even eating cake.
These are small, quick tasks that anyone can fit into one’s day. Enjoying these tasks can expand on the joys and happiness you’ll already experience. Studies have shown that positive emotions such as joy and happiness have lasting health.
Instances of increased joy and happiness broaden a person’s perspective and behavioral mindfulness and help build lasting resources that include mindfulness, resilience, closer relationships, and even improved physical health as well as lower levels of depression and higher levels of life satisfaction.
It’s a common theory that joy, laughter, and happiness can be healing. This goes for decreasing pain as well. Studies have shown that positive emotions like happiness and joy reduce pain symptoms in health conditions and illnesses. The act of laughing causes an increase in the release of endorphins which are the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins cause a sense of well-being and can even relieve pain.
Laughter has been shown to relax the body. When we are experiencing pain, we tend to tense up and stiffen our muscles. laughing relieves tension and stress and in turn, it helps muscles relax. Experiencing Joy and happiness is the root of laughter.
Laughing increases the intake of oxygen-rich air that stimulates organs and increases the production of endorphins from the brain. Endorphins as previously mentioned help decrease pain. Laughing also depresses the stress response which helps the body to relax. Laughter also increases circulation which also helps to relax muscles and ease the pain.
